Diagram of the 1 v 1 Shooting drill

1 v 1 Shooting

Finishing

The drill begins with the two initial players from each line preparing to sprint towards the goal, keeping their eyes in a straight line towards the goal. The coach initiates by delivering a pass in front of the players. As the players see the ball coming from behind, a 1v1 situation unfolds toward the goal. Once the ball either finds the back of the net or goes out of bounds, the participating players return to the line, making way for a new pair to engage in the drill. Watch out for players committing fouls during 1v1 situations. Encourage players to stay on their toes, maintaining a state of readiness to receive the ball. The drill should be seen as inspiration. So feel free to adapt the drill to suit your team’s specific needs or focus areas.

1v1 & knock the ball

Possession

Create a square field and smaller grid (no-touch zone) in two width space and inside the space two balls placed on markers at opposite ends of the field. Yellow Team (Defenders): Starts with the ball on their side of the field. Red Team (Attackers): Positioned on the opposite side of the field. Place one ball on a marker at each end of the square grid, within the small grid. A Yellow defender starts by passing the ball to a Red attacker on the opposite side of the grid. The Red attacker receives the pass and dribbles quickly toward either ball placed on the markers and knock it off without stepping into the small grid around the ball. If the defender successfully clears the ball, the attacker must retrieve it and return to the side where they start. If the attacker knocks the ball, the defender will take the ball and place it on the marker and joins to their starting point without ball and attacker will takes the ball which he use to knock it off and goes back to the starting place. After all players have had a chance, Red becomes the defenders, and Yellow becomes the attackers. Finishing

One of the two defenders starts the game by passing the ball to one of the three attackers positioned at the cones. Upon receiving the ball, the attackers engage in a 3v2 attacking scenario. Defenders quickly move up towards the attackers, maintaining compactness and readiness to win the ball. Attackers aim to score swiftly, employing various runs to surpass the defenders. (Experiment with various running patterns) If defenders win the ball, their objective is to promptly get it into one of the small goals on each side of the pitch. Attackers earn 1 point for scoring a goal, while defenders earn 2 points for scoring in the small goals. The first team to reach 10 points wins. (Modify the scoring system to suit your team if it appears unfair to either side. Coaches should pay attention to the offside rule during the drill. Encourage players to stay on their toes, maintaining a state of readiness to receive the ball. The drill should be seen as inspiration. 3 zone 2v1

Possession

Mark out a rectangular pitch and divide it into three vertical zones. Place one defender in each zone, and have two attackers start from one end of the pitch. The attackers must combine and progress through each zone by beating the single defender in that area, using dribbles, passes, or movement. After successfully advancing through all three zones, the attackers finish by scoring in either of two target posts at the end of the pitch. If the defenders manage to win the ball in any zone, they quickly combine and attempt to score in the attackers’ single target post on the opposite side. This drill promotes 1v2 defensive resilience, attacking creativity, quick transition play, and counterattacking efficiency.

Diagram of the 4 attackers touch finish drill

4 attackers touch finish

Finishing

In this drill, four attackers are positioned in a diamond shape with one goalkeeper in goal and a mannequin placed just outside the penalty box to simulate a defender. Player 1 starts at the bottom of the diamond with the ball and initiates the passing sequence by playing a pass to Player 2 on the left side. Player 2 immediately passes diagonally across the diamond to Player 3, who is positioned opposite Player 1 at the top of the diamond. Player 3 then passes the ball to Player 4 on the right side. Player 4 makes a one-touch layoff pass into the path of Player 1, who has made a forward run toward the top of the diamond. Player 1 receives the layoff and takes a shot on goal, aiming to finish past the goalkeeper while avoiding the mannequin obstacle. After the shot, all players rotate clockwise to the next position in the diamond, ensuring everyone has a chance to play each role and take shots on target. KCP The drill focuses on sharp one-touch passing, timing of forward runs, and finishing under pressure, while also encouraging teamwork, communication, and fluid rotation.

Diagram of the 4 v 4 dribbling drill

4 v 4 dribbling

Small-sided games

1. Create a rectangular field approximately 55×40 meters, with a central zone of about 15 meters in width. Form two teams, each comprising 4 to 6 players, and assign a goalkeeper to each team. Feel free to adjust the length to better suit the needs of your team. 2. In this drill, the field is divided into two ends, and the players have the freedom to move within their respective zones. However, the ball can only transition from one end to the other through dribbling in the central zone. This setup encourages players to construct their plays patiently, waiting for the right moment to dribble through the central area. The defending team has the option to apply high pressure, aiming to prevent the attacking team from playing out of their zone. Yet, this defensive strategy comes with a risk. If the attacking team successfully navigates through the pressure, significant scoring opportunities open up. Therefore, the defending side must approach this tactic with careful consideration. 3. Encourage players to exercise patience and wait for the right moment to break through the middle zone. Make sure the defenders are communicating with each other. Call out your teammate’s name when passing for better teamwork. The drill should be seen as inspiration. So feel free to adapt the drill to suit your team’s specific needs or focus areas.

The drill is divided into two zones, each containing 4 attackers and 2 defenders. In Zone 1, attackers try to complete 10 consecutive passes under defensive pressure. Once successful, they must switch the ball to Zone 2, where the other group of 4 attackers continues the same task with their own 2 defenders pressing. If the defenders in either zone win possession, they immediately transition and attempt to score in one of two small goals placed on the outside of the zones. This creates a high-intensity environment for both maintaining possession and reacting to transitions. kcp The drill sharpens passing accuracy, spacing, defensive anticipation, and fast recovery during turnovers.

Diagram of the 5v3 goal area finish drill

5v3 goal area finish

Finishing

In this dynamic attacking drill, five attackers go up against three defenders and a goalkeeper in a designated goal-area scenario. The objective for the attackers is to finish the move within a maximum of six touches collectively, encouraging quick decision-making, sharp passing, and precise movement. The play starts just outside or inside the penalty area, depending on the session intensity. If the attacking team successfully creates an opening within the touch limit, they attempt to score past the goalkeeper. However, if the defenders manage to intercept, win the ball, or force an error, they are allowed to counter-attack and attempt to score in two small target goals placed wide outside the penalty box. This adds a transition element to the drill, forcing attackers to recover quickly and defenders to think proactively about pressing and transitioning. The goalkeeper remains active in defending the main goal, while the defenders shift between blocking attacks and exploiting space for counter-attacks. kcp The drill enhances speed of play, attacking creativity, defensive pressure, and transition awareness for both units.

Set up a rectangular pitch divided into two equal zones, with two posts at each end (total of 4). Begin with 6 attackers and 3 defenders. The game starts in one zone as a 4v2 possession game—4 attackers versus 2 defenders. The goal for the attackers is to maintain possession and then transfer the ball to the other zone. When the ball is played into the second zone, only the required number of attackers (2) move into the next zone, and 2 others follow, creating a new 4v2 situation in that zone. This movement must be timed so that as the ball moves, the right number of players arrive to maintain the 4v2 structure—no standing or waiting players are involved. Defenders shift dynamically and rotate as needed. If the defenders win the ball, they quickly try to score in either of the two nearest posts. Possession

In a delimited space, two teams of 8 players compete to maintain possession of the ball, with the help of 4 wild cards (neutral players) who always support the team in possession. This creates a situation of numerical superiority for the team with the ball, encouraging quick ball circulation and intelligent decision making. Objectives: Improve ball possession: Players must work on maintaining possession with precise passes and constant movement. Develop spatial and positional intelligence: Promote understanding of how to position yourself to receive the ball in optimal conditions and how to move to create passing options. Encourage communication: Players must communicate constantly to indicate passing options, movements without the ball and changes in game strategy. Increase resilience under pressure: Improve players' ability to stay calm and make good decisions even when they are being pressured by the opposing team.

1. Create a rectangular playing area about 20 x 10 meters, and add two smaller rectangles, each around 1-2 meters wide, to represent defending lines inside the larger square. Pair up the players into twos, leaving one player unpaired in the middle of the square. Position two pairs as defenders inside the small rectangles and distribute the remaining pairs on each side of the square. Adjust distances between cones based on the age and skill level of the players 2. The starting pair passes the ball to each other as they navigate to the opposite end of the square, aiming to pass through the two defending lines with the assistance of the free player in the middle. If successful, they pass the ball to the next pair, who repeats the process. Emphasize that players cannot dribble through the defending zone; they must pass through it. However, if the defenders intercept the ball or force it out of play, they switch positions with the pair who made the mistake, and a new round begins. Defenders must stay compact and communicate to effectively close passing lanes. Rotate the free player in the middle every 3 minutes, adjusting based on the age and skill level of the players. 3. Communication between the players, both for the possession and defending players. Encourage players to stay on their toes, maintaining a state of readiness to receive the ball. 1. Set up three small goals a few meters from the middle of the field. Form a defensive backline with 3 or 4 players, with a couple of midfielders for support. Put out 4-5 attacking players to put pressure on during goal kicks. Adjust the number of players depending on your team’s tactical vision. 2. The ball begins with the goalkeeper (or one of the defenders) making a pass like a goal kick. The players then need to pass through the pressure from the attacking players and aim to get the ball into one of the three goals up the pitch. If the attacking team wins the ball, their goal is to score on the defenders and goalkeeper. The small goals represent the successful play through the pressure, marking the transition to the attacking players and the next phase of the game. This is the core objective of the drill. Experiment with different methods and strategies to pass through the pressure. Below, we’ve provided two examples for inspiration on how to build up against the pressure with a backline of 4 or 3 defenders. 3. The players aim to pass through the pressure, utilizing the full-back’s runs along the wide lines. The midfielders move around the pitch to open up space for the full-backs. 4. The focus here is on one of the defenders making a run up the pitch, either with or without the ball, aiming to create unexpected space against the pressing team. 5. Modify the player numbers on each team to suit your preferred playing style. Encourage players to stay on their toes, maintaining a state of readiness to receive the ball. Diagram of the pass back swith over goal drill

pass back swith over goal

Set pieces

In this free-kick set-piece routine from the right side of the field, the aim is to draw the opponent into pressing before exploiting space with a switch and cross. The play begins with a short pass backward from the free-kick taker to a supporting teammate positioned slightly deeper. This triggers the defending team to step up and press, anticipating a buildup. As the press begins, the deeper player immediately executes a long diagonal switch to the opposite side of the field where a wide player is ready in space. This player controls the ball and delivers an early cross into the box, targeting runners who have already timed their movement toward goal. The cross should arrive just as the attackers reach the danger area, aiming for a first-time finish or a well-placed header. kcp This routine relies on precise timing, awareness of pressing triggers, and quick execution to catch the defense unbalanced and exposed on the far side.

The player who came to support, after returning it to the server, remains there unhooked. In the next step, the player positioned at the edge of the area appears, who will be assisted by a teammate who will block his marker if necessary. This player will filter a ball to the player who was left off the hook after making the support in the corner, taking advantage of the fact that a rival player (probably the one in the post) has been left off the hook, breaking the offside position. Finally, the player who receives the ball gives a pass to a teammate to finish.
